Crowds also flooded adjacent streets and tried to enter the legislative building, where the administration had originally scheduled the community homage.

Political Legacy and Community Support

Though mainly known as an opposition figure, Odinga assumed the role of head of government in 2008 and also struck a political pact with Ruto last year in a career characterized by evolving coalitions.

He commanded intense commitment among adherents, especially in his ethnic group based in the country's west, many of whom maintain he was denied the nation's leadership by vote manipulation.

Many of Odinga's followers, who were not living in 1991 when Kenya established itself as a multi-party democracy, offered homage to Odinga's contributions as an advocate.
