"Any idea when you're chatting with the band?" an inquiry pops up. "My request was to ask if I can become their newest bandmate."

However, there remains a single issue: The author likewise desires to be Haim's additional sibling. Furthermore, we are far from alone. Several high-profile admirers have publicly petitioned for the role.

One thing is obvious an irresistible appeal is happening. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana began their career performing shows at small eateries with their parents. Presently, they stand as repeated Grammy Award hopefuls.

Similar to the best bands, they're a close trio. Their music videos frequently depict them marching in unison down the avenues of Los Angeles. In concert, they play with such unfettered joy you inevitably think, "I wish to be part of that, too."

"The numerous instances on tour that fans came up to us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I bought a bass'," states Alana, the most junior of the trio. "That's the ultimate honour. It is a prize in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can motivate young girls to start a band."

"Therefore all are welcome to be the honorary part of the family."

Award Nod

The band are speaking from their homes, where they're taking a pause after an major tour in support of their new album, I Quit.

They're presently processing the news it's been in the running for a top rock honor at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the first female band ever in contention for the award.

"I watch the lists every year, so it sort of feels like The Truman Show when your name is read out," explains Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this correctly or am I dreaming'?"

The significance of the accolade is deeply felt by the band.

"We really set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a significant milestone," adds Alana. "However we're just grateful for the women that inspired us."

Heartbreak and Laughter

The project was born from a period of transition. All three sisters ended up single, and the music inhabits that strange transitional period where you're glad to be free, but not quite ready to let go.

The words track endings and partings. The sisters want love, but not the specific love they've experienced. You can hear them figuring out in real life who they aspire to be.

"That's a perfect description, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a personal statement. You have to consciously practice ignoring the outside opinions and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Evolution of Sound

That recent resilience required a fresh approach – more unpolished and direct than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that started with the percussion.

"The drum sound is such a specific thing, and I am so passionate about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our memoir," laughs Alana. "Our motto is, our albums won't commence until we find the ideal drum sound."

Anecdotes and Collective Camaraderie

The band's honesty fueled the album's rollout, where the sisters revealed some of their romantic horror stories.

A former partner ended things with Este over a medical consideration. Alana told a story of flying to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"During these breakups, you just feel like there's no light," explains Alana. "Therefore to be able to find humor in those stories and have them tell you more outrageous stories, it's incredible."

A Confident Path

One can easily sense a change in the band. Now, Haim are more certain of their place in the music world.

They're top-billed acts, with hit albums and an international following.

But the sister act will forever be their number one focus.

"My sisters and I have been making music since I was a young child," concludes Alana. "It's like no other path that we were supposed to do. And I'm really fortunate we've gotten here and we're still going strong."
