The Film 'Together' Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

We present a challenge for long-term couples who enjoy scary movies: Get comfortable with your partner and view Together. The independent film success of 2025 recently had its streaming debut on Hulu. Outwardly, it might appear like standard biological terror, but inside Together exists a deep examination about the ways we decide to love each other.

An Introductory Film Investigating Partnership Complexities

Together represents the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, a pair who are not married that have been together for a decade. United in marriage in actuality in 2017, the two stars contribute a special spark to their roles, expertly portraying both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.

The narrative begins when Millie and Tim move from the big city to the country for Millie’s job. A familiar narrative setup, of course, but that’s largely where the conventions conclude. Together evolves into as much a examination of mental states of the pair’s relationship as it is a body horror flick.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While trekking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and the two discover an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence begins influencing the couple. This force compels a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past emotional intimacy.

The whole movie is a slow burn horror experience, interspersing elements of dreamlike terrors, unsettling (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and surprisingly comedic interactions (sometimes during something horrific). Michael Shanks skillfully blends these components neatly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting aura of dread.

Nuanced Portrayals

A great deal of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they skillfully illustrate numerous complexities to the characters’ relationship. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a emotional and physical gap. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to chase only his floundering music career gradually emerges.

Conversely, Tim experiences isolation and isolated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve relocated rural and distant from his network of friends. He fears the idea of completely losing his individual identity in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he can’t drive and is dependent on Millie for mobility.

Shanks’ smartest move in this movie avoids making one partner or the other the obvious villain.

Tim and Millie grapple with the sort of issues that come with long-term unions over a long period. Fundamentally, they continue to care for each other. They share moments of joy, comfort one another, and are vulnerable at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their relationship.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the supernatural forces in Together act as a metaphor for these concerns of unhealthy attachment and giving oneself over to another person, the metaphor never feels clumsy or self-important. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes provide a ideal counterpart to the character-driven drama. Both the supernatural and the personal work together in harmony.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s conclusion, which remains unspoiled, has created disagreement on the film’s ultimate message about unhealthy partnerships. It has been said that single viewers have interpreted the film as a powerful case for remaining unattached. Conversely, a few pairs experiencing tension found that the film ended up guiding them to make up.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could function as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the ending sow anxiety and horror, or a positive outlook on love? Will you identify in one of the characters and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your significant other and state, “I understand that choice”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an test you can undertake at this very moment.

Together is currently playing on Hulu as of this moment.
