Micky van de Ven found the net twice as Tottenham prolonged their winning streak in away games in the Premier League and handed Everton their first defeat at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

The Toffees were unbeaten in their last five matches at their new ground at the dockside location, having left their historic home behind after more than a century at the conclusion of last season.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven struck twice from set-pieces in the opening 45 minutes to put their impressive record at jeopardy, and they were failed to turn it around before the midfielder - set up by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - nodded in a final goal to seal the victory.

The Everton defender thought he had equalized the scores a short while after the defender's opener, glancing a bullet header past Guglielmo Vicario from an Everton corner.

Beto, meanwhile, missed a handful of chances, while Vicario made a series of excellent stops to ensure Tottenham went five away games without defeat in the English top flight.

But the video assistant referee stepped in, instructing Craig Pawson to review the goal on the pitchside monitor and the referee ruled that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in offside positions and had impeded with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

The win elevates Thomas Frank's side up to third in the Premier League, five points off north London rivals and leaders the Gunners.

Everton remain in 14th position and are half a dozen points ahead of the relegation zone.

Spurs breakdown: The defender excels in role at both ends of the field

Following a drab midweek display in the Champions League against Monaco, where they managed a only two shots on target, the manager chose the French striker in attack instead of ex-Everton forward the Brazilian.

The summer signing was unable to influence the game before being substituted for Richarlison after an hour on the pitch, but it emerged he proved unnecessary in the final outcome.

Defender Van de Ven transformed into an attacking force to be feared.

Tottenham's opening strike came from a cleverly executed set-piece play, with Rodrigo Bentancur directing the ball toward the face of goal for an unmarked the defender to score.

And Ven de Ven - filling in as skipper in the Argentine's unavailability - notched his next goal in added time as he rose above the England keeper to nod in.

Van de Ven was just as outstanding in defensive duties, partnering well with his defensive colleague as the duo handled superbly with the 34 crosses thrown their way by Everton.

Toffees breakdown: Everton missing striker's instinct

Everton's new home had been a fortress, but it appears the freshness may have faded somewhat and fans flocked to the gates after Sarr's third for Spurs.

The end in Everton's unbeaten home run will not be a major concern for David Moyes, but their striker situation are.

The forward and Thierno Barry - the Toffees' two recognised strikers - had scored just a single goal between them before Sunday's outing.

And they were unable to add to that poor tally on a wet and gloomy evening on in Liverpool.

The striker's form was summed up when he opted to bicycle-kick a clear chance from near the goal, even with having space and time to readjust for a more conventional shot that would have challenged Vicario.

The substitute, as well, was unable to make an impact after replacing the starter in the 65th minute.

It was not for a shortage of chance. Most of Everton's offensive moves came through the winger and Ndiaye, who relentlessly delivered threatening crosses into the Spurs box.
